Greene County voters approved a $10 million bond issue for a new county jail in the city/school election Nov. 7.
With all precincts counted, there were 1,412 votes (62.73 percent) in favor of the bond issue and 839 votes (37.37 percent) against. The bond issue needed approval by 60 percent plus one vote to pass.
The measure received a simple majority of favorable votes in all six voting precincts, but it was large margins in the two Jefferson precincts that provided the super majority needed. The percentage of voters who marked “YES” on their ballots, by precinct, was North, 61.27; Central, 61.43, Jefferson 1, 66.46; Jefferson 2, 67.08; East, 56.36; and West 51.72.
The renewal of Greene County Community School District’s physical plant and equipment levy (PPEL) was also approved by a vote of 1,176 Yes to 806 No. That vote required only a simple majority – 50 percent plus one vote to pass.
The PPEL was turned down in two precincts, but again, other precincts gave the question the margin needed for approval. The percentage of voters who marked “YES” on their ballots for the PPEL, by precinct, was Jefferson 1 59.75; Jefferson 2, 66.16; Central 59.85; West 55.29; North 46.15; and East, 45.68.
Votes are unofficial until the county supervisors canvass the vote Monday, Nov. 20.
